ArtyBird Summer School

Our popular summer school is running for a fourth year. Each week we offer 2 options: one with Rosie and the other with Kate.
The courses are held at Carnforth high School, Lancashire in light, well equipped rooms with ample parking and disabled access. The school is a 10-minute walk from the train station and just off the M6 motorway at junction 35.
We have frozen the course fee for you this year, at £200 for 5 days, plus £30 for materials and equipment.
The comprehensive, full colour, course booklets have received much praise, making it easy to continue working on your own after you have finished the course.
The day starts at 9.45 and ends at 3.45, allowing time for leisurely breakfasts and evening activities. If you would like local accommodation lists then please click here for our 'Student Resources' page or Rosie can send one to you.
Mighty Bites is across the road offering a range of quality and value hot and cold meals at lunchtime.
We will award an ArtyBird certificate for anyone attending and completing a course. Some courses can be taken as a Level 1 City & Guilds qualification if you wish. There is a £75 registration and administration fee for this.
Week One - Mon 26th to Fri 30th July
An Introduction to Creative Computing with Kate Horner - Back by popular demand.
I designed this course two years ago for artists and makers who wish to use PhotoShop within their design work. This is a powerful design tool that can open up new dimensions and directions. I will show you how to use a few tools within PhotoShop to combine images and create new ones. There will be lots of time to work on building up a personal portfolio of work.
Please bring with you your digital camera, USB lead to connect it to the computer and ample batteries. You can import and export images on a USB memory stick. These can be bought from Nexus in Carnforth if you do not have one. Please bring your sketchbook and current work if you would like to work with these alongside photographs. We will be using PhotoShop Elements 5.
You can download a PDF leaflet with all the above information here.

Week Two – Monday August 2 to Friday August 6
An Introduction to Felt Making with Kate Horner
This is for the absolute beginner who wishes to learn how to make good quality felt. You will learn how to work with different wool breeds, including raw fleece. You will develop simple designs to be able make using a range of felt techniques. These include inlay and mosaic techniques using pre-felts, alongside fibre painting techniques. Texture and working with natural wools and other fibres are also explored.
On the final day you will make a 3-dimensional vessel using a resist technique.
Sewing Skills with Rosie Jackson
This course is for the beginner or for those who want to revisit sewing techniques. You will develop a reference book of sewing techniques that can be applied to fashion, embroidery or soft furnishings. You will use your machine fully, building up confidence to go onto making your own items. If students wish to use their own machines then this is encouraged although we do have several that students can use.
This course can be taken as a City & Guilds level 1 course.
Week Three – Monday August 9 to August 13
Intermediate Creative Computing with Kate Horner
Continued by popular demand!!
I am designing this course to continue from the introductory course. I will introduce some new tools within PhotoShop looking at two key areas.
1. Correcting and developing photographic images.
2. Making creative digital images by combining techniques and starting points. You will be asked to bring in a small project to work on with photographs, sketches and small items that can be scanned. Also, bring in a few materials
of the craft area you work in that fit with your project that we could utilise within the work. There will be lots of time to work on building up a personal portfolio of work.
Images already in digital form should be at 300ppi, no bigger than 7”x5”, as a tif. file and on a USB memory stick. These can be bought from Nexus in Carnforth if you do not have one. We will be using PhotoShop Elements 5.
