ArtyBird Summer School

Our popular summer school returns for a fifth year. Running for two weeks, each week we offer 2 options: one with Rosie and the other with Kate.
The courses are held at Carnforth High School, Lancashire in light, well equipped rooms with ample parking and disabled access. The school is a 10-minute walk from the train station and just off the M6 motorway at junction 35.
The day starts at 9.45 and ends at 3.45, allowing time for leisurely breakfasts and evening activities. If you would like local accommodation lists then please click here for our 'Student Resources' page or Rosie can send one to you.
Mighty Bites is across the road offering a range of quality and value hot and cold meals at lunchtime.
Summer School 2011
Week One - Monday July 25 to Friday July 29
An Introduction to Creative Computing
Students are taught the basics of Adobe Photoshop in order to develop their design work. The course starts with looking at image input including simple photography guidelines. Kate has designed the course to learn a minimum number of Photoshop tools and to use them in a range of ways; from simple photographic corrections, to combining images and taking them into creative realms. There is an introduction to drawing and to pattern repeat. Students leave with a comprehensive portfolio of work on a range of papers and materials. All courses are a progression of 10 assignments.
Creative Sketchbooks with Rosie Jackson
Create a visual and annotated sketchbook based on the theme "Beside the Sea'.
The inspiration for the course will come from photographs and pictures of seascapes, beaches and related material such as shells, seaweed, rocks and pebbles. These will be supplied but individuals can bring their own photographs if they wish.
You will learn how to:
" Decorate and edge papers
" Observe, investigate and experiment to create individual pieces or art work
" Use a variety of art media and techniques
" Use these methods again for future design projects.
We will not be working directly into the book. It will take on the form of a scrapbook with each piece of work being presented on a page. The completed sketchbook can then be used as a reference for future textile/art work.
The course fee includes a sketchbook and all art materials.
Week Two - Monday August 1 to Friday August 5
An Introduction to Felt Making with Kate Horner
This is for the absolute beginner who wishes to learn how to make good quality felt. You will learn how to work with different wool breeds, including raw fleece. You will develop simple designs to be able make using a range of felt techniques. These include inlay and mosaic techniques using pre-felts, alongside fibre painting techniques. Texture and working with natural wools and other fibres are also explored. On the final day you will make a 3-dimensional vessel using a resist technique.
Make an Outfit in a Week with Rosie Jackson
This week long course gives you the opportunity to make an outfit of your choice. This can be a skirt and top, trousers and top, simple dress and unlined jacket or anything else that you have always wanted to make but need some guidance.
You will need to bring your own pattern and fabric but there is the option on day one to visit a fabric shop in Lancaster to buy patterns and fabric if you wish.
You will also need your own sewing machine, and some basic knowledge of how to use it would be beneficial.
*The cost for this course is £210 as you provide the fabric and equipment.
