City & Guilds offers a series of 4 courses taking the student from a beginner to a professional maker. Kate Horner has developed these courses starting with the basics of feltmaking; moving on through understanding how design ideas can be worked in felt; to preparing a professional portfolio.
City & Guilds 7711 - Level 1
An Introduction to Feltmaking: Creative Techniques
This is a one-year course leading to a Certificate in Textiles, specialising in Felt Making. Four Modules are studied:

This course starts September for attending students. On-line students can start at anytime. Students will be recommended to study An Introduction to Creative Computing before starting the Level 2 course. This is offered as a Summer School each year in Carnforth or as an on-line course.
City & Guilds
Level 2 Certificate in Felt
This is where you practice the techniques learnt at Level 1, perfecting your skills and design application. You produce your samples folio to demonstrate this. You will start to be experimental, pushing your own ideas, with guidance, as you develop your own voice.

City & Guilds
Level 3 Certificate in Felt
At Level 3 you will be developing your work as an individual maker to be in the position to run your own studio or teach your subject. When working at this level a high degree of self-direction is needed, the tutor taking on the role of guide and mentor.

Level 3 Diploma in Felt
ArtyBirdCarnforth are disappointed that City & Guilds are no longer able to offer this course. We are looking to replace this course with a Higher Level 4 course in September 2012.
Upon registration, you will be enrolled into our virtual college. Your assignments will be added to your workspace, and you will upload your work into your workspace for assessment or feedback. You can communicate with your fellow students through the virtual college too. On completion of each full assignment, you will be asked to post your work to us for assessment. You are responsible for the cost of the return post.
