City & Guilds offers a series of 4 courses taking the student from a beginner to a professional maker. Kate Horner has developed these courses starting with the basics of feltmaking; moving on through understanding how design ideas can be worked in felt; to preparing a professional portfolio.

City & Guilds 7722 – 15
Level 1 Certificate in Felt

• 30 Guided Learning Hours

This is an introduction to feltmaking for the beginner or a textile student wishing to extend their skills base. It concentrates on developing good feltmaking skills through a range of samples and exercises that builds into a reference file.

The assignments include:

• How to make felt using a variety of wools and techniques.
• Simple design considerations, such as colour, shape, line and texture
• Working with texture using a range of fibres.
• A simple 3D piece using a resist.

All courses are a progression of 10 assignments.

City & Guilds 7822 – 67
Level 2 Certificate in Felt

• 120 Guided Learning Hours - usually over 1 year

This course builds on the skills learnt at level 1 by establishing good feltmaking techniques with design considerations so that students can plan and make a range of felt pieces. There is a short design module, a sample file and 2 individual projects.

Through the projects students are shown how to prepare and develop ideas, and see them through sampling to a final piece.

Level 3 Certificate in Felt

• 420 Guided Learning Hours, usually over 2 years.
• Students will be expected to commit to the equivalent of 1 day per week of home study.

This course is for the serious designer maker who has good felt making skills and wants to explore design approaches to develop individual pieces.

The design module is a third of the course, studying colour, shape, line texture and form through art media. Students are taught the theory and then develop projects based on themes of their own choice. Approaches to felt are studied alongside the design work, with students working through to make complex final pieces. Students are encouraged to look at the work of artists and makers throughout the course to support their work.

As well as a folder of samples, students work on individual projects under the themes of:

• A panel
• An accessory
• 3 innovative samples
• A wall hanging and a 3D item

Students are shown how to plan, develop and record a project in a professional way.

City & Guilds 7923 – 52
Level 3 Diploma in Felt

ArtyBirdCarnforth are disappointed that City & Guilds are no longer able to offer this course. We are looking to replace this course with a Higher Level 4 course in September 2012.

The course materials arrive on a DVD as PDF files to open on your home computer. These are a combination of assignments and PowerPoint presentations. You can present your work for assessment by electronic means and/or post, to suit you. You are responsible for the cost of the return post.
