City & Guilds offers a series of 4 courses taking the student from a beginner to a professional maker. Rosie will be delivering two of these starting with the level two and progressing to the level 3 certificate. The learner will be introduced to the basic techniques and processes for constructing their own garments, progressing to the more complex projects at level 3 if they so wish.

All courses are based on portfolio building through samples and a number of finished projects. The courses are a progression of 10 assignments.

Attended courses are held in Carnforth, Lancashire, starting in September 2010.

Level 3 Certificate in Fashionwear

  • 210 Guided Learning Hours per year.
  • 1 weekend a month for 11 months for 2 years.
  • Students will be expected to commit to the equivalent of 1 day per week of home study.

This course is for the serious designer maker who has good dressmaking skills and wants to explore design approaches to develop individual pieces.

The design module is a third of the course, studying colour, shape, line texture and form through art media.

This course enables you to design your own patterns through a set pattern-cutting module. This will form the basis for the rest of the garments that will include: A blouse/shirt, a skirt, trousers or shorts, a dress and a lined jacket.

As well as the individual garments the student will produce a portfolio of complex techniques and processes, sampling such areas as seams, hems, collars, embellishment, fastenings, fabrics and haberdashery.
