Embroidery

City & Guilds offers a series of 4 courses taking the student from a beginner to a professional maker, Rosie will be delivering these courses starting with an introduction to the basics of hand embroidered stitches and techniques. The learner can then progress through the various levels, developing their skills in both embroidery and design.
All courses are a mixture of portfolio building through samples and a number of projects.
They are each made up of 10 assignments.
Attended courses are held in Carnforth, Lancashire, starting in September 2010 - usually the third weekend of the month.

Level 3 Certificate in Embroidery
This course is designed to explore in some depth the skills and techniques of embroidery and will allow for the development of both traditional and innovative processes.
The design module is a third of the course, studying colour, shape, line texture and form through art media. You are taught the theory and then develop projects based on themes of your own choice.
A variety of processes will be studied alongside the design work, with you working through to make complex final pieces. You are encouraged to look at the work of artists and makers throughout the course to support your work. As well as a folder of samples, you work on individual projects under the themes of: a panel, an accessory, 3 innovative samples, a wall hanging and a 3D item. You are shown how to plan, develop record and present a project in a professional way.

Level 3 Diploma in Embroidery
This is for the professional embroiderer who wants to explore their work to a high standard of craftsmanship. This will enable them to put together a personal portfolio which that they can then use to further their careers if they so wish.
In the course students will apply and develop the design and craft skills learnt on the certificate course. The first year is a research year exploring a theme of the students choice through a design module and a series of embroidered samples. The samples are designed to push student knowledge and technical understanding as well as artistic development. The history of embroidery is studied as well as contemporary makers in a visual and practical way. It is important to keep this year open ended, so that students are kept open minded about possibilities and do not shut down any of these too soon by focusing on developing items.
Students who have been through this process have been surprised at their maturity as artists and makers during the second year; they have certainly hit a new level in their work. The second year projects have broad headings to allow for individual style and interpretation to come through.
The themes are:
Large Scale
3D Item
A Panel/Hanging
Use of metallic threads
8 Samples using various made backgrounds
Ideas for these projects will be developed from the first year work.
