Summer School Dates for 2008

Last year we launched ArtyBirdCarnforth with our Summer School. This year we are going to hold 2 seperate weeks of courses, as requested by our students.

Week One: Mon July 28 - Fri Aug 1: "An Introduction to PhotoShop Elements 5"

Cedar Walk at Taplow Court by Kate Horner

Cedar Walk at Taplow Court by Kate Horner

We use various aspects of PhotoShop Elements 5 in the design modules on our City & Guilds courses. Students have asked me to write a short course that will introduce them to the software.

On Day 1 you will be shown how to take successful photographs with your digital camera, making them the best they can be using PhotoShop Elements 5. We will spend the rest of the week developing these into a range of new and exciting images. These will form a portfolio that you will be able to take away with you and work on in your medium of choice.

This course will be of interest to artists and crafts people who wish to expand the range of media used. It will also be of interest to teachers who wish to use this software with their students and can be taken as part of their CPD. You can go on to use it in your work and to support the craft courses you are taking. You may even decide this is the medium for you and go on to take a Creative Computing Course.

This is a 30 hour course leading to an ArtyBird Qualification. The course fee is £200. The course will be held at Carnforth High School, Lancashire.

Week Two: An Introduction to Felt Making

Exploring Textures by Meg Layfield

Exploring Textures by Meg Layfield

We are a specialist centre in felt making and we offer this course every year for you to discover the potential of this craft. Through the course you will develop the skills to create good quality felt and be shown how to use different materials and approaches to develop your ideas. Many students go on to further courses with us.

This is a 30 hour course leading to a Level 1 City and Guilds Qualification, if desired. The course fee is £200 plus £75 registration and admin fee for City & Guilds if students wish to have this. Many take this course purely for interest, but some people like to have the qualification for their professional development.

The course will be held at Carnforth High School, Lancashire.

Week Two: An Introduction to Machine Embroidery

Wrap by Rosie Jackson

Wrap with Machine Embroidered Motif by Rosie Jackson

Using your sewing machine for embroidery is exciting but it can be a little daunting if you have never done this before. This is an excellent course that will intoduce you to the potential of your sewing machine. Rosie will give you the confidence to explore your machine, materials and techniques as she demonstrates a range of samples that you will work through.

Students can go on to take further courses in machine embroidery or take this course to add to their skills for other areas of interest.

Kate and Gaye go to the Awards Ceremony in Leeds

Kate congratulates Gaye

This was a lovely occasion held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, celebrating the achievements of so many talented people of all ages and in a wide range of subjects. It was a pleasure to sit and talk with some of them over lunch, and the food was good too. Thank you to the City & Guilds Leeds office for organising the event.
