City & Guilds 7923 – 52 Level 3 Diploma in Felt
210 Guided Learning Hours per year
1 weekend a month for 11 months for 2 years.
Students will be expected to commit to the equivalent of 1 day per week of home study.
This is for the professional felt maker who wishes to put together a portfolio that describes yourself as “a maker”. With this you can market yourself in a feltmaking career such as maker, teacher and a range of other areas.
In the course you will apply and develop the design and craft skills learnt on the certificate course.
The first year is a research year exploring a theme of the your choice through a design module and a series of felt samples. The samples are designed to push your knowledge and technical understanding as well as artistic development. The work of makers throughout history and in other countries as well as contemporary makers is explored in a practical way. It is important to keep this year open ended, so that you are kept open minded about possibilities and do not shut down any of these too soon by focusing on developing items.
Students who have been through this process have been surprised at their maturity as artists and makers during the second year; they have certainly hit a new level in their work.
The second year projects have broad headings to allow for individual style and interpretation to come through. The themes are:
Apparel
Interior
A set of
Use of colouration and/or embroidery at stages of feltmaking
A low relief and textural piece
Ideas for these projects will be developed from the first year work.
Hybrid Courses will be plus Summer School Fees. Hybrid courses combine the advantages of being able to work at home at your own pace with sharing your work with fellow students during a week's summer school.
